Welcome to Chemistry
Chemistry is a major discipline in the School of Biomedical, Biomolecular and Chemical Sciences with a distinguished record of world-class teaching and research dating back to the inception of the University in 1911. Many of its graduates are internationally famous scientists in industry, government and academia. In 2005 it will move into the new $65M Molecular and Chemical Sciences building with its state-of-the-art laboratories and equipment.
As an enabling physical and biological science, Chemistry attracts the highest quality students into undergraduate and postgraduate teaching and research programs. Its academic staff teach chemistry to undergraduate students doing degrees in almost all faculties in the University and have recently been awarded five of the University's Excellence in Teaching awards. There are over 500 first year students doing chemistry courses.
The Discipline has strong research links with a number of disciplines within and outside the University. It has national and international collaborative links and encourages higher degree and research links with industry and government organisations. Chemistry staff are engaged in supervising BSc Hons, MSc and PhD students in research into chemical synthesis, structural chemistry, biological chemistry, industrial and analytical chemistry, computational chemistry, sustainable (green) chemistry and nanotechnology. |
